I entered the Rembrandt competition and…
I was one of the 3 winners!
You might think of Rembrandt as only very serious oil paintings by the Dutch Baroque genius from the 17th century (1606-1669), but it’s also the name of a brand under Royal Talens that produces high-quality oil paints, acrylic paint, watercolor, pastels, and more.
This brand is celebrating its 125th birthday with an art challenge. For every 2 months of 2024, they have selected a painting for which we can create an interpretation. It doesn’t have to be an oil painting, you can choose your medium. Every 2 months, there are 3 winners and I was lucky to be one of them this time! 🙂
For January and February, the painting that we had to use to interpret was “The Storm on the Sea of Galilee”
Some people were somewhat confused by the work that I had sent in:
This was my entry:
For my interpretation (not copy) I decided to draw attention to one of the largest art thefts in history. Thirteen paintings were stolen, and the heist remains unsolved. At the museum, there is still an empty frame where once the masterpiece was exhibited. Today, the painting could be worth about 500 million dollars.
I painted the museum in bright acrylics and mixed it with collage. The neon pink was very hard to photograph or scan, but I made it work 🙂
My price wasn’t 500 million dollars, but a fantastic package of paints and paper delivered to my door!
It included: oil paints and acrylic paints (a selection of colors that I didn’t have yet), a watercolor granulation set (tubes), and acrylic paper. I had been waiting for the delivery by the window and couldn’t contain my excitement when it arrived! Almost 4kg of art supplies!
Pretty colors!
I already made color swatch cards of the acrylic paint and I love the colors and texture!
If you’re participating in the next round, good luck! And have fun 🙂
