Februari sketchbook
In February, I’ve been using two sketchbooks: An A4 Royal Talens, and an A5 from Moleskine.
As in the previous month, I worked a lot with the Artgraf, a bit with the water-soluble charcoal, and finally some acrylic paint too!
As I mentioned in my post about creative inspiration, this month too I had a great time on Patreon with sessions by TJ Marston, Sarah Dyer, and Katie Moody (a new one that I joined).
The first one was a session by TJ with turtle images from Beth Spencer. I was very tired and struggling to see the images as I couldn’t zoom in on my laptop, but it was a nice and chatty session.
Second was a very interesting live session with Katie Moody about hard vs soft textures. It was challenging but fun. On YouTube, Katie demonstrated her approach to the reference image, calmly explaining every step of the process and experiment while we could just watch or draw along. You can tell that the soft texture was way out of my comfort zone, but I’ve learned a lot from it!
Following the YouTube session, Katie also did a Patreon session with a focus on textures. We started with exploring mark-making based on rocks, clouds, grasses, and more. After that warm-up, we continued with 2 longer ones.
Sarah Dyer organized a “dapper dressing” session with Naomi Wood. I always forget what time we had, but I think it ranged between 3-20minutes.
Not so dapper but still dressed: the ‘Voil Jaenetten’ of Aalst carnival:
TJ’s session ‘copying master paintings’ focused on painting, for which I chose acrylics in juicy layers 🙂
The session by Sarah Dyer was all about tackling complex images. my favourite approach in a smaller sketchbook is zooming in and selecting the parts that I like the most.
And last but not least: a neon kind of Nordic winter session with TJ based on my photographs.
More about this session here.
